In 1994 there were fewer than 3,000 websites online. By
2014, there were more than 1 billion. However, the number of active websites
recorded in January 2014 actually contracted by around 4 million to just over
180,000,000.
The exact number is difficult to quantify. Thousands of sites open
and close every single day. The majority
of which probably relate to new businesses vs. closing businesses, as well as
personal weblogs.
